a) JOB PURPOSE

The Biomedical Engineer is responsible for the installation, inspection, maintenance, calibration, and repair of medical equipment to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of all biomedical devices within the hospital.

The role supports clinical teams by ensuring that diagnostic and therapeutic equipment is fully functional, compliant with safety and regulatory standards, and available to support quality patient care. The Biomedical Technician also contributes to equipment lifecycle management, preventive maintenance programs, and technical support for clinical staff.

b) MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Medical Equipment Maintenance & Technical Support

✓ Perform preventive maintenance, calibration, and routine inspection of medical equipment according to manufacturer specifications and hospital maintenance schedules.

✓ Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and electronic faults in medical devices to minimize downtime and service interruptions.

✓ Troubleshoot equipment failures and ensure prompt restoration of functionality in clinical areas.

✓ Maintain operational readiness of critical equipment including patient monitors, infusion pumps, ventilators, anesthesia machines, laboratory analyzers, imaging devices, and theatre equipment.

✓ Coordinate with equipment vendors and service providers for specialized repairs and maintenance beyond in-house capability.

2. Equipment Safety, Compliance & Quality Assurance

✓ Ensure all biomedical equipment complies with hospital safety policies, biomedical engineering standards, and regulatory requirements.

✓ Conduct safety inspections, electrical safety tests, and performance verification to ensure patient and staff safety.

✓ Ensure compliance with infection prevention and control guidelines when handling and servicing medical equipment.

✓ Support hospital accreditation and regulatory inspections by ensuring proper documentation and equipment compliance records are maintained.

✓ Participate in risk management processes related to equipment safety and usage.

3. Equipment Lifecycle Management

✓ Support the procurement process of new medical equipment, including development of technical specifications and evaluation of supplier proposals.

✓ Participate in equipment selection, acceptance testing, installation, and commissioning of new devices.

✓ Maintain an updated inventory of all biomedical equipment, including service history, warranty status, and maintenance schedules.

✓ Monitor equipment utilization and provide recommendations for replacement, upgrade, or decommissioning of obsolete devices.

✓ Assist in planning for equipment budgeting and capital expenditure requirements.

4. Documentation & Reporting

✓ Maintain accurate service records, maintenance logs, and technical documentation for all biomedical equipment.

✓ Ensure proper tracking of maintenance schedules, repairs, spare parts usage, and equipment downtime.

✓ Prepare technical reports related to equipment performance, faults, repairs, and maintenance activities.

✓ Maintain equipment service records in biomedical maintenance systems or hospital asset management systems.

5. Staff Training & User Support

✓ Train clinical and technical staff on proper operation, safety, and routine care of medical equipment.

✓ Provide guidance to users on correct handling of equipment to prevent misuse or damage.

✓ Develop and disseminate basic equipment user guidelines and troubleshooting tips.

✓ Support departments during the introduction of new medical technologies.

6. Collaboration & Operational Support

✓ Work closely with clinical departments, nursing teams, laboratory services, radiology, and theatre staff to ensure equipment availability and reliability.

✓ Provide on-call technical support where required, especially for critical clinical equipment.

✓ Participate in hospital committees or projects related to equipment management, technology upgrades, and infrastructure improvements.

✓ Support emergency response efforts where medical equipment functionality is critical to patient care.

c) MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS / QUALIFICATIONS

✓ Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering, Medical Engineering, or a related field from a recognized institution.

✓ Minimum five (5) years’ experience working as a Biomedical Technician in a busy hospital or healthcare setting.

✓ Demonstrated experience maintaining and repairing diagnostic, monitoring, and therapeutic medical equipment.

✓ Knowledge of hospital biomedical safety standards, infection prevention requirements, and medical device regulations.

✓ Registration with Association of Medical Engineering of Kenya (AMEK) or relevant professional body.

d) KEY JOB REQUIREMENTS

✓ Strong technical troubleshooting and equipment repair skills.

✓ Knowledge of medical device technology and hospital biomedical systems.

✓ Ability to interpret equipment manuals, circuit diagrams, and technical documentation.

✓ Strong analytical and problem-solving ability in high-pressure clinical environments.

JOB TITLE: CLINICAL PHARMACIST

REPORTS TO: MEDICAL DIRECTOR

a) JOB PURPOSE

The Clinical Pharmacist is responsible for providing clinical pharmacy services, medication therapy management, and pharmaceutical care to ensure safe, effective, and rational use of medicines within the hospital.

The role supports multidisciplinary patient care by reviewing prescriptions, monitoring drug therapy, promoting antimicrobial stewardship, and ensuring compliance with pharmaceutical standards and regulatory requirements. The Clinical Pharmacist also contributes to patient safety, medication error prevention, and quality improvement initiatives in line with the hospital’s patient care objectives and the Pharmacy and Poisons Board of Kenya guidelines.

b) MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Clinical Pharmacy Practice & Patient Care

✓ Conduct clinical review of prescriptions and treatment sheets to ensure appropriate drug selection, dosage, interactions, contraindications, and therapeutic effectiveness.

✓ Participate in multidisciplinary ward rounds to provide pharmaceutical input in patient management and treatment planning.

✓ Monitor drug therapy outcomes for inpatients and outpatients, identifying and resolving medication-related problems in collaboration with the healthcare team.

✓ Undertake medication reconciliation during patient admission, transfer, and discharge to ensure continuity and accuracy of medication therapy.

✓ Provide medication counselling and adherence monitoring for patients, particularly those on chronic therapies.

2. Medication Safety & Quality Assurance

✓ Conduct drug utilization reviews to promote rational use of medicines and optimize therapeutic outcomes.

✓ Identify, report, and analyze medication errors, adverse drug reactions, and other medication safety indicators.

✓ Participate in implementation of patient safety and medication safety programs within the hospital.

✓ Ensure compliance with clinical protocols, pharmaceutical regulations, and standard operating procedures.

3. Antimicrobial Stewardship & Clinical Governance

✓ Actively participate in Antibiotic Stewardship Programs, ensuring compliance with antimicrobial guidelines and appropriate antibiotic use.

✓ Serve as an active member and provide professional advice to committees such as:

✓ Medicines and Therapeutics Committee

✓ Antibiotic Stewardship Committee

✓ Infection Prevention and Control Committee

✓ Other clinical governance or advisory committees

✓ Monitor and enforce institutional antibiotic stewardship restrictions and policies.

4. Pharmaceutical Operations & Dispensing

✓ Ensure accurate and timely dispensing of medications for inpatients and outpatients in accordance with prescriptions and established protocols.

✓ Supervise and participate in sterile compounding, chemotherapy reconstitution, and extemporaneous preparations in accordance with safety standards.

✓ Maintain proper handling, storage, and management of pharmaceutical products in compliance with regulatory requirements.

5. Education, Training & Professional Development

✓ Provide drug information and therapeutic education to clinicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.

✓ Conduct continuous professional development sessions for pharmacy staff and healthcare teams on safe medication practices.

✓ Educate patients on medication use, side effects, drug interactions, and adherence strategies.

6. Documentation, Reporting & Compliance

✓ Prepare and submit monthly, quarterly, and annual pharmaceutical reports in line with hospital requirements.

✓ Maintain accurate pharmaceutical records, drug utilization reports, and clinical intervention documentation.

✓ Support hospital accreditation processes, regulatory audits, and pharmacy inspections.

 

7. Collaboration & Clinical Support

✓ Collaborate closely with physicians, nurses, laboratory teams, and other healthcare professionals to optimize patient outcomes.

✓ Participate in hospital quality improvement initiatives related to medication management and patient safety.

✓ Support implementation of clinical protocols and medication management systems across departments.

c) MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS / QUALIFICATIONS

✓ Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy from a recognized institution.

✓ Valid practicing license and registration with the Pharmacy and Poisons Board of Kenya.

✓ Possession of a current practicing license available for use by the hospital where applicable.

✓ Minimum two (2) years’ clinical pharmacy experience in a busy hospital setting.

✓ Demonstrated experience in clinical pharmacy practice, medication therapy management, and patient care support.

✓ MBA or postgraduate qualification in Clinical Pharmacy or Healthcare Management will be an added advantage.

a) JOB PURPOSE

The Hospital Cook is responsible for the preparation, cooking, and presentation of meals for patients, staff, and visitors in accordance with hospital dietary guidelines, nutrition standards, and food safety regulations.

The role ensures that meals are prepared safely, hygienically, and in line with prescribed therapeutic diets, supporting patient recovery and overall hospital service quality. The Hospital Cook works closely with the nutritionist/dietitian and kitchen team to maintain high standards of food quality, hygiene, and efficient kitchen operations.

b) MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Food Preparation & Meal Production

✓ Prepare and cook nutritious meals for patients, staff, and visitors according to approved menus and dietary requirements.

✓ Ensure meals are prepared in accordance with therapeutic diet plans prescribed by the nutritionist or dietitian.

✓ Maintain high standards of food presentation, taste, and portion control.

✓ Assist in preparation of special meals for patients with specific medical conditions such as diabetic, low-sodium, or modified diets.

✓ Ensure meals are prepared and delivered within the required timelines to support hospital operations.

2. Food Safety, Hygiene & Infection Control

✓ Ensure strict adherence to food safety regulations, hygiene standards, and infection prevention guidelines.

✓ Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of kitchen equipment, food preparation areas, and storage facilities.

✓ Follow proper food handling, storage, and temperature control procedures to prevent contamination and foodborne illnesses.

✓ Ensure compliance with hospital food safety policies and regulatory requirements.

3. Kitchen Operations & Inventory Support

✓ Assist in receiving, inspecting, and storing food supplies and ingredients.

✓ Ensure proper stock rotation (FIFO) and safe storage of perishable items.

✓ Support monitoring of food inventory levels and report shortages or wastage to the kitchen supervisor.

✓ Assist in maintaining efficient kitchen workflow during meal preparation and service periods.

4. Patient Nutrition Support

✓ Work closely with the nutritionist/dietitian and nursing teams to ensure patient meals meet prescribed dietary requirements.

✓ Support preparation of specialized diets for patients with clinical nutrition needs.

✓ Ensure patient meals are accurately labeled and distributed according to dietary instructions.

5. Equipment Use & Maintenance

✓ Operate kitchen equipment safely, including ovens, cookers, food processors, and other cooking appliances.

✓ Ensure proper cleaning and maintenance of kitchen equipment after use.

✓ Report any equipment faults or safety hazards to the kitchen supervisor or management.

6. Team Collaboration & Support

✓ Work collaboratively with the kitchen team, nutrition department, and support staff to ensure efficient food service operations.

✓ Participate in hospital food safety training and continuous improvement initiatives.

✓ Assist in other kitchen-related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

c) MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS / QUALIFICATIONS

✓ Certificate or Diploma in Food Production, Culinary Arts, or Hospitality Management from a recognized institution.

✓ Minimum two (2) years’ experience working as a cook in a hospital, hotel, or institutional kitchen.

✓ Knowledge of food safety standards, hygiene practices, and infection prevention requirements.

✓ Experience preparing large-scale meals and specialized diets is an added advantage.

✓ Valid Food Handler’s Certificate.

d) KEY JOB REQUIREMENTS
