Background

The Council of Governors (CoG) is established under Section 19 of the Intergovernmental Relations Act 2012 with the mandate to provide a mechanism for consultation amongst County Governments, share information on performance of the counties in execution of their functions, facilitate capacity building for governors, and consider reports from other intergovernmental forums on national and county interests amongst other functions (Section20). For better execution of its mandate, the Council of Governors is established in various sectoral working Committees and Departments. To enable the Council to achieve its mandate and vision, the Council wishes to recruit an Intern to support the Legal Department at the Council:

Scope of Assignments

Reporting to the Legal Officer, the intern will perform the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Assist in monitoring and reviewing Bills from the Senate and National Assembly;
  • Assist in monitoring the Hansard and Order Papers at the Senate and the National Assembly;
  • Assist in monitoring the Kenya Gazette;
  • Assist in coordinating logistics in the Legal and other COG meetings.
  • Assist in following up on actions pursuant to Council meetings, Summit, as well as Intergovernmental Budget and Economic Council meetings
  • Updating the schedule of cases and preparing court briefs;
  • Research and prepare Legal briefs on Legal issues arising.
  • Compile any required information and maintain documentation.
  • Assist in convening and taking minutes for the bi-weekly Committee meetings;
  • Assist in research on contemporary issues regarding devolution
  • Assist in the preparation of press statements in conjunction with the Communication Department.
  • Assist in tracking the media reports on Legal matters and developing a status update matrix on the decisions taken from time to time on the issues highlighted;
  • Support in the implementation of the Legal Department work plan;
  • Performing any other duty as assigned by the supervisor.

Duration of the assignment

The internship duration is for a period of six (6) months.

Required Qualifications

  • Have a Bachelor’s Degree in Law;
  • Should not be currently undertaking the Kenya School of Law
  • Certificate in Computer Applications.
  • Experienced in undertaking comprehensive research;
  • Outstanding Interpersonal, analytical, and communication skills;
  • Ability to follow deadlines, accuracy, and attention to detail;
  • A high level of computer literacy and proficient in written and spoken English and Kiswahili; and
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
