Job Summary

The purpose of Tutor – Public Health role is to teach and inspire students in the link between environment and public health and prevent health problems in the community before they occur incorporating current public health trends and prepare students for future careers ensuring they have the knowledge and skills needed to prevent diseases and promote health. The job holder will primarily teach applied public health and environmental principles and their application in practice.

Duties and Responsibilities

Curriculum Implementation

  • · Prepare content to be taught in class in accordance with curriculum objectives.
  • · Plan, prepare, and deliver well-structured, clearly public/community health lessons appropriate to the abilities of students.
  • · Develop course outline: establish an outline of the course to be taught and calculate a time frame for the instructional plan in accordance with school regulations and curriculum objectives.
  • · Prepare teaching and research materials to be taught in class in accordance with curriculum objectives.
  • · Create and update course materials, issue assignments, and develop marking schemes.
  • · Set exam, moderate exams, administer exams, mark and grade examinations.
  • · Identify areas where current provision is in need of revision or improvement.
  • · Contribute to the planning, design and development of objectives and material.
  • · Stay updated with current public health trends and integrate them into the curriculum.

Classroom Management

  • · Public health/community: deliver curriculum on public/community health topics.
  • · Conduct lectures, seminars, and practical sessions.
  • · Initiating, planning and conducting research, community diagnosis.
  • · Provide high quality teaching in public and community health.
  • · Establish and maintain a positive and inclusive classroom culture.
  • · Implement effective classroom management strategies to create a conducive learning environment.
  • · Foster a sense of community and respect among students.

Assessment and Feedback

  • · Establish expectations for each student which are clear, challenging and achievable.
  • · Assess students: Evaluate students academic progress, achievements, course knowledge and skills through assignments, CATS, and examinations.
  • · Use a data driven approach to identify learning patterns, strengths, weakness and implement effective action plans to address any learning gaps.
  • · Collaborate with colleagues to analyze assessment data and adjust instructional strategies accordingly.
  • · Assess students on industrial attachments and grade them.
  • · Participate in the educational outreach plans of the School and Institute, developing links with, for example, industry or community partners.
  • · Provide timely and constructive feedback to students to support their academic growth.
  • · Find ways of disseminating and applying the community diagnosis survey results.
  • · Maintain accurate records of classroom attendance and students performance.
  • · Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned work day.
  • · Prepare students for college qualifying and external licensing examination.

Individualized Support

  • · Identify learning needs of students and define appropriate learning objectives.
  • · Collaborate with staff to address the unique needs of individual students.
  • · Provide guidance and support to students regarding academic and career goals.

Administration

  • · Participate in school meetings to coordinate curriculum and instructional strategies.
  • · Participate in School decision making processes.
  • · Respond to the Schools Strategic Plan.
  • · Carry out School protocols and administrative expectations accurately and on time.
  • · Participate in and help develop internal and external community networks.
  • · Performs other duties as may, from time to time be assigned by the supervisor.

Essential Qualifications

Academic and Professional Qualification

  • · Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health.
  • · Registered with Public Health Officers and Technicians Council. (PHOTC)

Experience

  • · Minimum of 2 years experience as a Tutor.
