Finance Controller at Turaco

Turaco is looking for a Finance Controller with strategic finance experience who will be responsible for managing the finances of our business on a day-to-day basis. For this role, we are looking for someone comfortable building, maintaining, and scaling an accurate, process-efficient reporting system so that Turaco can efficiently meet its business objectives.

The Financial Controller will report directly to the CFO. An ideal candidate has built and led a finance function, has a multi-country and multi-entity finance background, group consolidation, and reporting, and preferably comes from an insurance background.

We’re looking for someone who is a builder and likes creating systems for reporting complex entities in a rapidly changing environment. The role will be in the Service Center (shared services)

Key Roles And Responsibilities

Finance

  • Managing monthly reporting across the finance team, such that consolidation is as efficient and fast as possible
  • Ensure IFRS17 compliance as Turaco becomes an underwriting entity in several of its operational jurisdictions
  • Consolidate and reconcile entries and accounts for reporting
  • Management Accounts: Accountable for the overall management accounts and presentation to the CFO and other leadership team members
  • Preparing variance reports

Financial policy & planning

  • Implement an efficient management reporting system including selecting and subsequently managing the integration of a new ERP
  • Implement and maintain an adequate system of financial controls; proactively identify where additional controls may be needed
  • Drive the company’s financial and cash planning and preparation of cash flow forecasts
  • Make recommendations to improve processes and systems, proactively planning for scale within the finance department
  • Run the annual budgeting process

Team Management

  • Lead a team sitting across Kenya, Uganda, and Ghana, reporting to the CFO
  • Manage the output quality of the entire team, their performance management, and growth within Turaco
  • Expand the team as needed, staffing the department with the right skills and functions.

External Stakeholder Management

  • Develop and maintain relationships with key business partners (including banks, auditors, actuaries, and regulatory bodies across markets we are present
  • Manage annual audits across all entities and country units
  • Own key vendor relationships in the Finance unit

Knowledge Skills And Abilities

  • Live Turaco’s values – care and protect our customers, do the right thing for our customers, and have fun!
  • Bachelors-level degree in a financial discipline
  • Professional qualification (CPA, ACCA)
  • 10 years minimum experience with at least 2 years in a Controllership position or similar
  • A Plus (but not compulsory) if you have previous experience working in a start-up, in multiple African countries and have an insurance industry background
  • A hands-on builder, comfortable with complexity and the ever-changing aspects of a growing business
  • Great attention to detail, with integrity, and can effectively communicate

  • You have led a team, reviewed and consolidated their reporting, and built a sense-checking mechanism for reported numbers
  • You have built finance functions from the ground up including, management accounts, setting up ERP systems, and building a team.
