The African Union (AU) Elections 2025 are set to be a crucial moment for the continent as member states prepare to elect new leadership for the AU Commission. First Round

Raila Odinga too an early lead in the first round of voting for the African Union Commission chairmanship with 20 votes, followed by Mahamoud Ali Youssouf with 18. Richard Randriamandrato secures 10 votes. No outright winner so voting proceeds to the second round.


Second Round

Raila Odinga secured 22 votes in the second round of voting for the African Union Commission chairmanship, with Mahamoud Ali Youssouf of Djibouti close behind at 19.

Madagascar’s Richard Randriamandrato trailed with 7 votes.


Third Round

Mahmoud Ali Youssouf takes the lead in the third round of voting for the African Union Commission chairmanship with 23 votes, while Raila Odinga secures 20. Richard Randriamandrato receives 5 votes, with 1 abstention.


Fourth Round

Mahmoud Ali Yusuf takes the lead in the fourth round of voting for the African Union Commission Chairmanship with 25 votes, while Raila Odinga secures 21 votes.

The contest remains highly competitive as the candidates push for the decisive 36-vote threshold required for victory. More rounds are expected as AU member states weigh their final choices.


Raila Odinga and Mahmoud Ali Yusuf headed into the decisive round as the battle for the African Union Commission chairmanship reaches its climax.


Fifth Round

Mahmoud Ali Yusuf (Djibouti) – 26 votes, Raila Odinga (Kenya) – 21 votes and Abstentions – 2


Sixth Round

Raila was withdrawn after gathering 22 votes while Mahmoud Ali Yusuf (Djibouti)  gathered 26 Votes


African Union voting system explained

The AU states that the leader must get at least 2/3 of the casted votes.

When we still don’t get a winner who gets the 2/3 of the votes, there can be a special meeting to decide on the matter
