Calling for Volunteer at Kenya Red Cross Youth

Join us as a Volunteer Adult Ally and support ICON in Kisumu to understand underlying challenges and potential system-level solutions to help more youth access jobs and business opportunities under the Youth Excel Project. Volunteer at Kenya Red Cross Youth

Calling all stakeholders in Kisumu; opportunity to volunteer as a champion for youth change! Youth Excel Program, implemented by IREX and in partnership with Kenya Red Cross Society has been supporting a youth network in Kisumu dubbed the ICON (Issue-based Collaborative network), made up of twenty youth representing 10 different organizations in Kisumu County.

The youth network has been working collaboratively to address critical issues in Kisumu County, mainly, the challenge of limited economic opportunities for young people, and the difficult transition of youth from school to work opportunities.

The network has been conducting Implementation Research to understand underlying challenges and potential system-level solutions to help more youth access jobs and business opportunities.

Currently, the youth network has identified three key areas of advocacy where we need your help.

In order to help youth in Kisumu County access jobs and business opportunities, the youth network has identified three things that can be done:

  • Equip resource centers so that youth can use them to access digital jobs and search for employment/economic opportunities
  • Advocate for the development of a Kisumu County Youth Policy
  • Improve decent work for youth through linkages, training and apprenticeships, and improve access to finance for youth in business

As an adult ally, your roles will include the following:

  • Participate in ICON workshops providing input into the work the youth network is doing.
  • Contribute to practical activities the network engages in e.g. stakeholder forums and partnership meetings.
  • Provide mentorship and technical support to youth to support them to design better solutions in the three areas of advocacy outlined above.
  • Open up relevant networks you have with the youth to enable them to meet the right stakeholders to advocate for their solutions.
  • Support the youth to develop partnerships with relevant institutions and bodies that will help them achieve their objectives.
  • Champion youth and adult collaboration in decision-making spaces for better system solutions overall.
