Job Purpose: Applications for Young Statisticians Programme

A Young Statistician at Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) at this level will work under Supervisors and Mentors to guide him/her in the performance of duties and responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities

  • Learning and improving on statistical programming skills including as R and Python to enhance production of statistical data;
  • Assisting in the development of statistical and machine learning models in support of various domains of statistics;
  • Participating in the development of new approaches of getting insights and managing data within various real-time and open-source data, such as social media, incident tracking databases, geospatial data, etc;
  • Working in collaboration with stakeholders on projects to develop applications to address emerging areas of official statistics
  • Performing other related duties as may be assigned.

 Requirements for Appointment

  • Must be a Kenyan citizen;
  • Must have attained a Bachelor’s Degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Geospatial/ Geographic Information Systems or related qualifications from a recognized institution;
  • Proficiency in using R or Python programming languages ;
  • The opportunities are in four categories namely: Software Engineering, Data Science, Data Management and Geospatial Technology.

  • Applicants with the following additional qualifications will have an added advantage:

For Software Engineering Category

  • Full Stack Development experience with focus on Web Applications / Web Development;
  • Front-End Development expertise:  HTML, JavaScript and/or TypeScript
  • Experience with at least one of the following frameworks/libraries: NextJS, D3JS, ThreeJS

For Data Science Category

  • Proficiency in artificial intelligent (AI) and Machine Learning
  • Experience with data manipulation and analysis libraries: Pandas, NumPy, Scikit-learn
  • Proficiency in SQL for data querying and manipulation
  • Experience with at least one of the following data visualization tools: Matplotlib, Seaborn, Plotly

 For Data Management Category

  • Proficiency in data management;
  • Experience with at least two of the following database systems: PostgreSQL, MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server
  • Familiarity with data management tools: Database administration tools, Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) tools, Data quality tools

For Geospatial Technology Category

  • Familiarity with Geographical Information System (GIS) and remote sensing tools to generate data specific to a location or geography;
  • Familiarity with QGIS software;
  • Experience in geospatial programming using Python programming language;

  • Register with the National Social Security Fund (NSSF);
  • A valid Certificate of Good Conduct from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation;
  • Register with Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA)
