Job Overview

We are looking for a proactive and detail-oriented Health & Safety Intern at Kwetu Nairobi, Curio Collection by Hilton to join our team, supporting both the Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality (SHEQ) function and the Engineering Coordinator role. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong administrative capabilities and a structured, analytical mindset. This role plays a key part in driving the implementation of occupational health and safety standards, ensuring statutory compliance, and upholding internal policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure all required legal documents are up to date to maintain operational compliance and avoid regulatory penalties.
  • Coordinate with relevant staff to ensure timely renewal of certifications required for food safety compliance.
  • Participate in safety committee meetings and document discussions, decisions, and action points for follow-up and record-keeping.
  • Organize and update documentation related to safety events to ensure traceability and support audits or investigations.
  • Track identified safety gaps and ensure responsible parties implement corrective measures within agreed timelines.
  • Coordinate scheduled maintenance activities and ensure timely updates to prevent equipment failure and safety risks.
  • Check fire extinguishers for functionality, pressure levels, and expiry dates to ensure readiness in case of emergencies.
  • Inspect first aid kits monthly and restock supplies to maintain preparedness for minor injuries or medical needs.
  • Liaise with service provider to plan and oversee pest control activities, ensuring hygiene standards are maintained.
  • Support safety awareness initiatives and encourage adherence to health and safety protocols across departments.
  • Provide flexible support to the Health & Safety committee, assisting with emerging needs and contributing to overall SHEQ goals.
  • Log incidents accurately and promptly on the Directorate of Occupational Safety and Health Services platform as mandated by law.
  • Submit detailed reports of workplace incidents to the insurance department in line with internal procedures to support claims and investigations.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree/diploma in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science or NEBOSH in OSH.
  • Basic knowledge of OSH Act 2007 and relevant safety regulations in Kenya.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Strong organizational and record-keeping skills.
  • Excellent communication and report-writing abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and maintain confidentiality.
  • Keen attention to detail and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
  • Structured thought process and ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
