Farm Officer (Market Garden)

Farm Officers at MaGreen Morganics

The Farm Officer (Market Garden) will be responsible for the overall production of high quality and nutrient-dense vegetables and fruits at the Fikirini Farm market garden. This includes, but is not limited to planning, nursery management, planting, nurturing, pest & disease management, harvesting and packaging of the market garden produce.

Purpose of the Role

Reporting to the Farm Manager, the Farm Officer (Market Garden) will be responsible for the overall production of high quality and nutrient-dense vegetables and fruits at the Fikirini Farm market garden.

This includes, but is not limited to planning, nursery management, planting, nurturing, pest & disease management, harvesting and packaging of the market garden produce.

Duties and Responsibilities

You will have specific responsibilities for the following:

Planning

  • In collaboration with the Farm Manager, undertake overall planning and budgeting for the market garden and fruit enterprise.
  • Contribute to the development of the standard operating procedures and guidelines for the market garden and fruit growing operations.
  • In collaboration with the Farm Manager, outline the equipment, supplies and materials, seeds & seedlings, and anything else required for the smooth operation of the market garden and fruit enterprise.
  • Contribute to the development of, and undertake implementation of contingency plans based on anticipated unfavourable events e.g. adverse weather, pest and disease attack etc.

Compost Preparation

  • Responsible for the design, set up and management of a compost system, ensuring that there is a constant supply of high quality compost each week.
  • Ensure that all supplies required for high-quality compost preparation is in place to ensure uninterrupted supply of compost.

Nursery Management

  • Setup, maintenance and repairs of all the seedling nurseries and beds on the farm. Propose improvements to the design and setup of the nursery infrastructure based on ongoing use.
  • Responsible for the selection of high quality seeds and other propagation materials, manage the propagation process and seedling management (including watering, fertilisation and pest management), resulting in strong and high quality seedlings that are ready for transplanting or the market.
  • Ensure that adequate and high quality seedlings are available on time to meet the planting schedule and/or customer requirements.
  • Responsible for organising, labelling seedling trays and sections, and maintaining accurate nursery records.
  • Responsible for seedling hardening and other preparations for transplanting.

Crop & Fruit Tree Management

  • Responsible for planting holes and beds preparation to the specified design and standards and for compost and soil amendments application to recommended specifications.
  • Properly label the beds with the irrigation block system in place for easy tracking in the crop planning calendar and identifying current crops on a bed.
  • Responsible for seedling hardening, transplanting, mulching and watering.
  • Ensure regular irrigation and watering of the vegetables and fruit trees, as per the requirements of each crop.
  • Undertake regular weeding, pruning of trees as needed and thinning of vegetables to ensure optimal production.
  • Research on, prepare and apply organic fertilisers at different stages of the crop lifecycle e.g. during flowering, fruiting, etc.

Pest & Disease Management

  • Perform daily rounds and checks on plant health to identify pest or disease infestation and keep a record.
  • Research on organic integrated pest management (IPM) and ensure the most effective approach is applied at the Fikirini farm. If needed, be responsible for the preparation of organic pest & disease management solutions.
  • Apply organic sprays and remedies to mitigate or reduce infestation by pests or diseases.

Harvesting, Packaging & Marketing

  • Responsible for harvesting, cleaning, sorting, grading, packaging and loading of products for transportation to the market.
  • Take part in the sale of the products on the different market days as produce becomes available. This might involve the delivery of produce to the market using the company motorbike or car.

Records Management & Reporting

  • Record information about crops like seed sowing date, seedling transplanting dates,crop period to maturity and harvest dates and end of crop season.
  • Keep a record of the amount of soil additives, amendments and compost used per bed.
  • Keep a record of crop yields per bed to help with better planning for future seasons.
  • Keep a record of plant rotations to stay on top of reducing pest infestation and soil depletion.
  • Keep a record of plant pests and diseases and any remedial action(s) taken.
  • Inspection of crops and fruit trees on the farm and inform management of progress or any issues to be addressed.
  • Undertake monthly equipment inventory on the farm.
  • Maintain a record of farm inputs e.g. seeds, soil amendments & fertiliser, pest management solutions, and other inputs, and ensure management is informed 5 days in advance when restocking is required.
  • Undertake daily, weekly and monthly reporting to the Farm Manager and Managing Director.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

Other duties that may arise from time to time as delegated by the Farm Manager and/or the Managing Director.

Key Performance Metrics

This role will be measured against the following key performance metrics:

  • Number of beds prepared for planting.
  • Number of holes dug and prepared for planting.
  • Amount and quality of compost produced weekly.
  • Quality and timeliness of seedlings produced from the nursery.
  • Number of trees planted.
  •  % of trees that survive.
  • Number of vegetable seedlings planted.
  •  % of seedlings that survive.
  • Weight & quality of produce from the farm.
  • Timeliness & quality of reports from field activities.
  • Instances of pests and diseases mitigated.
  • Successful mitigation or control of pests and diseases infestation

The Farm Officer (Livestock and Poultry) will be responsible for the poultry and animal operations at the Fikirini Farm. This includes, but is not limited to planning, feed & fodder production, poultry management, goat management, pest & disease management, harvesting and packaging of the produce.

Purpose of the Role

Reporting to the Farm Manager, the Farm Officer (Livestock and Poultry) will be responsible for the poultry and animal operations at the Fikirini Farm.

This includes, but is not limited to planning, feed & fodder production, poultry management, goat management, pest & disease management, harvesting and packaging of the produce.

Duties and Responsibilities

You will have specific responsibilities for the following:

Planning

  • In collaboration with the Farm Manager, outline the equipment, supplies and materials, feeds & fodder, medication,, and anything else required for the smooth operation of the poultry and animal enterprise.
  • Contribute to the development of, and undertake implementation of contingency plans based on anticipated unfavourable events e.g. disease outbreak.
  • Planning for the repair and maintenance of the poultry, livestock, feed & fodder production systems.

Feed & Fodder Production

  • Planning and estimation of the feed and fodder requirements for all poultry and animals, and ensuring that a minimum stock of three month’s supply is available on the farm.
  • Responsible for planting and nurturing diverse feed and fodder for the poultry and animals. This includes, but is not limited to fodder grass, fodder trees, grains & pulses, etc.
  • Design, set up and manage the production of azolla which should account for 30% of the poultry and animal feeds.
  • Design, setup and manage the production of black soldier fly system which should account for 50% of the poultry feed.
  • Research on additional organic feed and fodder production approaches that will contribute nutrient-dense feed and fodder, while significantly reducing the costs.

Livestock and Poultry Management

  • Support the animal and poultry acquisition process and transportation of the same to the farm.
  • Support in the poultry hatching process – set the incubator ideal conditions, place the eggs and constantly monitor water levels to regulate humidity till hatching takes place.
  • Actively be involved in the brooding process of the chicks by ensuring they have been provided with the best conditions to thrive.
  • Feed a balanced clean diet and water to the animals and poultry on a daily basis at the scheduled times without fail.
  • Weigh and record the weight of the goats on a monthly basis to ensure they are getting an appropriate feed ratio to help them gain the required weight.
  • Maintain a clean environment for the animals by doing regular cleaning of their houses, and delivering the animal waste to be used in the composting system.

Pest & Disease Management

  • Perform daily rounds and checks on poultry and animal health to identify pests or diseases, isolate any sick poultry or animals and apply recommended remedies.
  • Research on organic pest and disease management options and ensure the most effective approach is applied at the Fikirini farm. If needed, be responsible for the preparation of organic pest & disease management solutions.
  • Administer poultry and livestock medication or dewormers as directed by management according to the set calendar.

Harvesting, Packaging & Marketing

  • Responsible for harvesting of animal products including egg collection, milking of the goats, and slaughtering of poultry.
  • Responsible for cleaning, sorting, grading, packaging and loading of products for transportation to the market.
  • Take part in the sale of the products on the different market days as produce becomes available. This might involve the delivery of produce to the market using the company motorbike or car.

Records Management & Reporting

  • Keep a record of all types of animals and flocks of poultry on the farm, their ages and weight.
  • Keep a record of livestock and poultry pests and diseases and any remedial action(s) taken.
  • Record any mortality of poultry and livestock and reasons why.
  • Keep track of amounts of poultry and animal feed consumed on a daily basis translating to monthly demands for better planning for future purchases.
  • Record poultry and livestock productivity e.g. egg production, milk production, etc.
  • Inspection of poultry and livestock on the farm and inform management of progress or any issues to be addressed.
  • Undertake monthly equipment inventory for the livestock and poultry operation.
  • Maintain a record of poultry and livestock inputs e.g. feed, fodder, medication,, and other inputs, and ensure management is informed 5 days in advance when restocking is required.
  • Undertake daily, weekly and monthly reporting to the Farm Manager and Managing Director.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

Other duties that may arise from time to time as delegated by the Farm Manager and/or the Managing Director.
