Music and Swahili Teacher at Nairobi Waldorf School Trust
Position Overview.
The Music and Swahili teacher will be responsible for delivering engaging and inclusive lessons that inspire students to develop their linguistic and musical abilities. This role involves teaching both traditional and contemporary Swahili language and music, nurturing students’ communication skills, cultural appreciation, and creative expression. The teacher will guide students in building confidence in speaking, reading, and writing Swahili as well as developing musical skills through singing, instrumental practice, and performance.
The music and Swahili Teacher will work collaboratively with colleagues to develop curriculum resources, integrate cross-curricular learning opportunities, and contribute to extracurricular activities such as choirs, cultural events, and performances. The teacher will also help maintain an inspiring learning environment that celebrates linguistic and artistic achievement while fostering a deep appreciation for Kenyan and global cultures.

Key Responsibilities
Student Progress and Attainment
- Ensure lesson content is aligned with curriculum requirements and that objectives are measurable, providing clear outcomes for students to achieve.
- Create structured, engaging and differentiated lesson plans that cater to a range of learning styles and abilities.
- Use formative assessment techniques during lessons to monitor student understanding and adjust teaching strategies accordingly.
- Provide timely and constructive feedback to students, guiding them on areas for improvement and recognizing achievements.
Engagement and Participation
- Increased participation in extra-curricular music activities or competitions.
- Create an engaging, dynamic classroom atmosphere that encourages creativity and active participation from all students.
- Build positive relationships with students to increase their motivation and willingness to participate in class activities.
- Organize and promote extracurricular activities such as music clubs, field trips, exhibitions and competitions to engage students beyond the classroom.
Assessment & Reporting
- Develop and administer tests, and assignments to assess student understanding of both languages.
- Provide timely and constructive feedback on assignments, projects, and exams.
- Maintain accurate records of student performance and progress.
- Report to parents and school management on student achievements and areas needing improvement.
Professional Development & Contribution to School Life
- Actively contribute to cross curricular initiatives and whole school projects.
- Take on leadership roles within the department, such as leading special projects, school music exhibitions or managing extracurricular music clubs or events.
- Contribute to the development and review of departmental resources to ensure the
department meets the evolving needs of students and the school.
Creating a Collaborative Learning Environment
- Encourage group work and collaborative projects where students can share ideas, learn from one another and develop teamwork skills.
- Promote cross curricular projects that link music with other subjects, fostering greater engagement through interdisciplinary learning.
- Facilitate peer reviews and cooperative learning activities where students can reflect on each other’s work and learn through feedback and interaction.
Desired Qualifications & Experience:
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Music and Swahili.
- Must be registered with TSC.
Experience:
- At least 3 years of experience teaching music and Swahili at the primary or secondary level.
- Familiarity with current teaching methodologies, including the use of technology in music and swahili education.
- Proficient in teaching violin and recorder.
- Has the ability to teach soprano, tenor and alto parts.
- Strong organization & Communication skills.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Classroom Management: Effective strategies for managing diverse classrooms and ensuring all students engage in the learning process.
- Adaptability: Ability to adjust teaching strategies to accommodate the needs of different learners, including those at different language proficiency levels.
- Cultural Sensitivity: Deep understanding of the cultural nuances of both English- and French-speaking regions and the ability to incorporate these into lessons.
- Collaboration: Strong team player with the ability to collaborate with other educators, parents, and the broader school community.
